Farmer’s Thoughts: One Point
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on May 6, 2011
One point!! That is what it came down to in the end! That is the most frustrating thing really about the situation we have put ourselves in…..ONE POINT!!
Other teams that needed wins, such as Brighton and QPR managed to pick up the points but unfortunately we couldn’t pick up any in our last 3 games. That is just the way things go in football really and we have to accept that. Other teams in the league did us no favours but ultimately it has been our own faults that we now have to play the play off. If we look at some of the games throughout the season, we know ourselves that we should have picked up more points along the way and it should never have come down to the final game against West Ham.
We have had a massive share of bad luck, with so many mad goals put in against us, whether it be own goals or some absolute worldys that have come off big toes and gone straight in the top corner. It is frustrating for us but essentially they do say ‘you make your own luck’ so we cannot really complain about that alone. Had we scored more goals we would have secured next seasons spot long ago, but no one in the team has really found their scoring boots this year.
We have more than matched most teams this season and I would imagine that the majority of them would look at where we finished and be shocked. We have played well this season. We just haven’t scored! The last two games of the season have been examples of the issues we have incurred all year.
We went one up against Charlton (which they scored for us! lol), missed three or four very good chances in the first half and then ended up losing 3-1. We had the champions rattled for a long period of that game and had we put the chances away, would have surely got the points. They are very fortunate to have a player that can really finish in Gemma Bryan otherwise it would have been a different story! So it all came down to the last game.
We knew a point would do it, but again it didn’t go our way. I’m not really one for a pun, but we ‘hammered’ them!
I think they would agree, as did every one watching. I don’t think we have played as well as that all season. Unfortunately we found their keeper in the form of her life and she won it for them in the end. Again it was a story of missed chances from us and it was devastating really as I actually think there was not a lot more we could have done to get something out of that game. The fight, the attitude, the desire from us was absolutely second to none, right from the keeper to the forwards.
Everyone was in bits at the end of the game, but I can honestly say that regardless of the result, I was so proud to be a Gills player and I felt immensely privileged to lead that group of players out that night. We have really bonded as a group lately, and although it hasn’t gone the way we would have hoped, team spirit has been as high as it has been all season. We have been given another chance, to secure our premiership status, and if we take out the same belief, spirit, desire and determination to work for one another, from the last game into the playoff final I can truly only see one outcome. COME ON GILLS, WE CAN DO THIS!!!!
