National Premiership Teams Headline Pre-Season

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on May 30, 2011

With the dust hardly settled from our debut campaign in The FA Southern Premiership than Gillingham Ladies swung into gear to arrange our pre-season friendlies.

It is a very exciting Pre-Season campaign that we have lined up, and one that will really get the players focused as there are no less than three National Premiership teams in the programme, including the current Southern Premiership Champions to give the Gills the test they require.

There are still a couple of dates we are looking to fill, but the line up currently is as follows:-

Wednesday 20th July v (H) Crystal Palace LFC
Palace are currently in the Combination league, after having to rebuild last season following relegation from The FA Southern Premiership, they stayed in the combination with a dramatic last day victory.

*CORRECTION* – Sunday 24th July v (A) Enfield Town LFC
Enfield Town are a strong Combination team who maintained a strong promotion push but fell away the last few games of the season. They had a fantastic run in The FA Cup last season

Sunday 31st July v (H) Barnet LFC
Tough game for the Gills as Barnet are the current League Cup holders, and finished in mid table in the National Premiership this season. Gills last met two seasons ago in The FA Cup where Barnet won 4-0 on the day, however the Gills had enough chances in the game to cause an upset.

Thursday 4th August v (A) Maidstone Town LFC

A local side who we could meet in the Kent Cup, Maidstone narrowly missed out on promotion to the Combination League a couple of season ago. They finished mid table in the League last season, and the two Clubs have formed a good relationship over the past couple of seasons.

Sunday 7th August v (H) Watford LFC
National Premiership side Watford visit Kent for the 2nd year running, as both teams played out an exciting 2-2 draw last summer. Watford themselves also had a relegation battle on their hands which they successfully survived last season.

Sunday 14th August v (H) Charlton Athletic LFC

The week before the season starts and an exciting tough derby game to get both teams focused for the season. Charlton will be preparing for the National Premiership after winning the Southern Premiership last season. They met 3 times last season with Gills winning the two games in Charltons back yard, whilst Charlton won the game in the Gills back yard. A club record 220 watched the recent home game.

The Reserve fixtures are currently being worked on, with their season starting two weeks later than the first team.
