Varley’s Views ahead of Enfield

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on July 23, 2011

Gills Ladies head into their fourth pre-season game of the season on Sunday when they travel to Enfield.

Enfield are familiar opponents for the Ladies and they will be sure to give the Gills their toughest test of pre-season so far.

Speaking at a wet training session, he said: “It will be a bit of an improvement from the Palace game in terms of where they finished in the League.

“As I have said before each friendly gets more and more difficult and we can start to look at how we fair against better quality opposition.

“Tuesday was good but Sunday will be a completely different test, we are playing away from home as well and that is always different. It will be different players again as certain players are away etc but we will go there and the result isn’t important, what we need is a decent run out which I am sure we will get.”

The Gills will now streamline the Reserves and Firsts to ensure that as many players can get ninety minutes as possible in the run up to the big kick-off.

He added: “We need to start getting 90 minutes now more than anything else, starting with 70s,80s and 90s that is the plan and I don’t think there will be any more teams in each half to be honest.

“We will look to give people 90 minutes on Sunday and likewise next weekend as well, we are going to try and get more midweek games as well.

“I think games are what we need more than anything else now. We have Fleet coming down on the 9th and we are going to try and get some more Braintree is likely to be one. We can then train once or twice on top of that, as games get your match fitness up and that is what we need at the moment.”
