Gills Ladies 5-4 Enfield Town Ladies

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on July 24, 2011

Gills Ladies made it three wins from four pre-season games as they beat Enfield Town Ladies this afternoon.

The Ladies were missing no less than eleven first team players and a young Gillingham team were somewhat disappointing against an Enfield side, who will be looking to win the South East Combination title next season.

It was a close run game in terms of score line with no less than nine goals going in but the Gills managed to edge the match by the odd goal.

The Gills travelled to Enfield a team they know well from playing in the Combination two seasons ago and they took the lead in the eighth minute through Natalie Crinean, with her sixth goal in three games.

It was 1-1 shortly after when a goalkeeping error gifted Enfield an equaliser. A bouncing ball was cleared up in the air by Sarah Jones and Layla Prior punched it off the back of the defenders head and Sinclair tucked home for Enfield. Shortly after their equaliser the hosts were ahead for the first time in the match thanks to Holly Brandons strike making it 2-1.

That is how the score line stayed for the rest of the first half, in what was a valuable run out for both sides.

Shortly into the second half and Laura East put the Gills back on level terms. The Ladies were soon to go back in front when Captain Danni Farmer found the net for the Ladies.

Danni Farmer then netted her second goal of the game with 10 minutes of the game remaining to make it 4-2.

Not to be outdone a couple of minutes later Laura East found the back of the net. Shortly after that and Enfield ensured an interesting end to the game when they scored their third through Fran Boggi.

There were just minutes left when Enfield really got the Gills pulses racing by netting a fourth goal to make it 5-4 thanks to Shannon Maloney.

That is how the scores would the stay as the Gills won their third friendly in a row and move onto a tough tie at home to Barnet Ladies from the National Premiership next Sunday at Chatham Town FC.

Speaking after the game manager Ian Varley, said: “”To be honest I’m not too pleased with today, especially the first half. We just didn’t get going at all and the tempo of our play was not quick enough. In the second half we improved as the opposition tired and scored some good goals”

Gills: Prior (Nunn, 45) Poole (Russ, 65), Jones S, Lynch, Taylor (Martin, 70), Ashton-Jones, Tune, McGregor (East, 30), Smith, Farmer, Crinean (Abbott, 65)
