The Weekend Preview: First Home Game
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on August 27, 2011
Buoyed by their win at the weekend the Ladies will be looking for home comforts this weekend as they play at home for the first time this season.
Brighton are the visitors to the Sports Ground as the Gills play their first home League game of the new season at their new home at the home of Chatham Town FC.
Deanna Cooper got the goals that saw the Gills into second place in the Southern Premiership last weekend.
Team News
Lauren Phillips came through her first 90 minutes for several weeks having been injured during pre-season.
There were welcome returns for Natalie Crinean and second half substitute Jodie Mugford last weekend.
After another good weeks training manager Ian Varley has a strong and fully fit squad to pick from making it a tough job for the manager.
The Squad
Chloe Baker, Yasmin Poole, Sian Cheedy, Sarah Jones, Deanna Cooper, Danni Farmer, Jodie Mugford, Liv McGregor, Emma Tune, Katie Hardaker, Laura East, Bryony Smith, Vicky Ashton-Jones, Natalie Crinean, Lauren Phillips, Charlotte Abbott
So far this season
The Ladies fell behind at the weekend to an Elly Maggs strike in the first half before a second half comeback saw the Ladies leave with all three points.
Deanna Cooper having moved up front from centre half bagged a very well taken brace to make it two wins from two opening League games in the Southern Premiership.
Brighton on the other hand entertained Keynsham at home and that game ended up in a high scoring draw finishing 3-3. It was a tale of the two Kim’s for the Seagulls as Kim Stenning scored twice and Kim Whitcombe scored the other. The Keynsham goals came from Leanne Lapham, Juliana Da Silva and Candy Hopson.
Last season the two sides met three times, once in the League Cup group stages and home and away in the League.
The Cup
A below par Gills came away from the group game on the end of a 1-0 defeat thanks to a miss hit cross from Kim Whitcombe flying into the top corner.
Home
At home in the League it was a different story as Lauren Phillips scored her first goal for the Gills in the first minute. Ashlee Hincks scored two goals one either side of a Leeta Rutherford strike for Brighton.
Away
Away from home it was a similar story for the Gills as they made it a double over the Seagulls in the League. Second half strikes from Danni Farmer and Laura Jeffery made it maximum points in the League from the two games.
The Venue
Chatham Town FC, Sports Ground, Maidstone Road, Chatham ME4 6LR
Kick-off
