Perry: I am massively disappointed

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on August 30, 2011

First team coach Aaron was less than impressed by the performance of Gills Ladies against Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

The coach didn’t mince his words when talking about a below par performance that saw the Ladies go ahead but lost in the end 2-1.

Speaking after the final whistle, Aaron said: “I am massively disappointed in fact I would say that I am absolutely devastated by today’s result.

“I said it before the game we had probably the best week in training, we worked hard on our shape and everything that we wanted and to get beaten in the manor we got beaten is just disappointing.”

Once again the Gills Achilles heel has come to bare as they conceded two goals from set pieces which is even harder to take for the Ladies coach.

He added: “We gave a silly foul away for their first goal but once again it is set pieces that have cost us. It has been the story of this season and pre-season was the same we thought that we had corrected it.

“Being fair to the girls though they had six or seven corners on the spin that we defended really well but we just switch off our concentration and they score. Their keeper has made one save all game and other than that she hasn’t had to make a save, so the game has been essentially about set pieces. We have once again lost a game and dropped points because of set pieces.

“It doesn’t matter what we do on the training pitch we can spend all week on the training ground putting the ball in the box and defend defend defend. However it comes down to concentration and we just switched off and it is something that we have to deal with as coaching staff. We need to look at what we do, we spoke to the players after but we have to deal with it now because we can’t go on like this. We will be in the same position we were last season, we are going to end up giving teams leads in games and that will kill us. “
The Gills created very few clear cut chances against Brighton and Aaron is aware that it is an issue that needs to be addressed.

He said: “No once again in the final third it was disappointing, it isn’t all negatives there are positives to be taken out of the game today. I don’t want people to think we are being negative we just set high standards and we want to go places. We have a group of players here that are talented and can go far.

“In the attacking third today though we were disappointing I don’t think we really had a shot this afternoon and that is something we need to address.
“I felt last week we came away thinking it was going to be a good season and I think it still will be a good season. We said before the game that we need to win back to back games and put wins together if we are going to move up the table. We haven’t done that today and we now have to pick ourselves up, we face Colchester next weekend at home and that will be a tough game.
