Varley’s Views ahead of Colchester
Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on September 2, 2011
The Gills head into their second home game in a week against Colchester on Sunday.
Manager Ian Varley is looking for an immediate response to the defeat against Brighton.
Looking ahead to the game speaking exclusively to the Gills Ladies Official Site, he said: “Colchester have had a tough start, but that said every game is tough at this level.
“I think they will be one of the strongest teams in the division, so it will be a tough game and we need to bounce back after last week.
“Although we have taken three points from six we were poor for both games. I had a chat with them on Tuesday and told them that it hasn’t been good enough.
“We need to improve and get back to basics. Some players are not doing it and some players are living in the past. We can’t afford to carry players; it’s about time we were living in the present and start performing because at the moment we aren’t doing that.
“We showed a lot of character to come back against QPR but against Brighton we just didn’t show anything yet we still probably should have taken a point from the game. We need to get back to having a go at teams and do what we do best which is attacking. I spoke to some players individually and as a group and if we can start taking games to teams again we should take more points.”
It will be a fairly open game on Sunday as Colchester have scored goals already this season something Ian hopes the Gills will do.
He added: “We need to start scoring goals and creating chances. To do that we need to start on the front foot and take the game to the opposition.
“Sunday wasn’t good enough and we need a massive improvement this week and if we do that then we’ll win the game.
“We have got top players at this club who on their day can be up there with the best in the Premier League. They just need to believe in themselves and perform on a Sunday.
Once the performances come the results will come as well for the Ladies something Ian is aware of.
He added: “Everyone says that we have got a great squad and we have. When other managers call me saying how have you lost when I’ve got so and so playing, it is clear that they are living on their names. They need to start performing starting this weekend!”
