The Midweek Interview with Lauren Williams

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on September 28, 2011

Lauren Williams returned to familiar surroundings on Sunday afternoon when she played her first game of the season.

Loz has spent the summer playing in America with fellow Gills Ladies player Danielle Carlton and both players are now back with their team mates.

Speaking after the game, Lauren said: “It felt so good to be back with the girls again, the team spirit at the moment is really good and everyone seems to be enjoying the start of the season.

“In terms of playing, it was good especially because of the way we played today, passing the ball quick and out playing the opposition completely in the first half. I have got to say though I was a little tired after ninety minutes, having not played a game since the end of July so that was a shock to the system, I think DC will agree with me on that one too.

It was a long way to travel for the Ladies and the return journey was a happy one on the Gills team coach.

She added:”It’s always nice on those long trips to be coming back happy. Everyone can have a laugh and a joke and the banter flows. Think Shauny and Potter stole the show on the bus last night with their ‘amazing’ singing and dirty dancing lift on the floor of the bus.”

Manger Ian Varley now has virtually his strongest squad available to him and Loz is fully prepared to be battling for her place in the team.

She said: “Of course, we went away knowing that when we came back we would potentially lose and have to fight for our spot so we both had that mentally coming home.

“Dan and I both felt that we improved whilst we were away, but there’s always room for more hey! I think this season everyone has just clicked so well and from what I’ve seen everyone seems to understand everyone else’s roles on the pitch also so that of course is a massive help and the new players that have come in have slotted in perfectly. To me it is a big reason as to why we are playing well in training and games.”

With Loz and DC away for the summer we had to ask Loz about her experiences of America and if she enjoyed it.

She added: “The summer was an amazing experience. It’s hard to put into words that actually tell the whole story. We did so much whilst we were away and met people that will stay in our lives forever.

“We couldn’t have asked for it to have gone any better, we travelled to a few places, we made the final fours, we were constantly laughing, and we loved every single bit of it. Especially the sun! We loved it over there and we definitely want to go over again next summer.”

Finally, we asked Lauren now she is back in the usual English weather (barring this week) of rain whether the America suntan has faded yet.

She said: “Ha ha well there’s times when I think I’m really white, then I stand next to people like Jonesy and Potter and it makes me feel a little browner ha!

“I think I am going to have to ask the skipper what bottle of tan she uses though; I’ve heard she puts it on in the changing rooms whilst we’ve been away! The tanning subject is funny because Dan and I had a competition when we were away, to see who could come back browner. I think it’s safe to say she won.”
