Varley’s Views ahead of Brighton

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on October 28, 2011

Ian Varley takes his side to the South coast for this weekend’s match.

The Ladies travel to Brighton for their return match in the League.

Speaking ahead of the game, Ian said: “If you look at the table they are the League leaders, but every team we have played so far this season have been very similar.

“It is why it is such a tight League, they are top and have taken 19 from 30 and we are 6th and have taken 13 from 30.

“It is a tough game and they beat us earlier in the season, and obviously we went a goal ahead. Things have changed for us since then; the team is different to what we had then.

“We will go there with plenty of confidence and we are playing with a lot of that at the moment. We have a lot of character and a lot of belief and we are getting results, we need more wins but the important thing is we aren’t losing.”

In the home fixture the Gills did go ahead and lost so Ian feels that they can take something from the game.

He added: “We were still bedding things in when we played them at the start of the season. We were trying new things and getting players back, we had the two girls in the states not back and Leah wasn’t here then.

“The start of the season always brings out the odd strange result, yes we owe them one but we will be going there to look to take the points like any other game.”

Last season the League was tight but this season it is looking tighter than ever.

Ian said: “It is a strange one, if we had turned a couple of draws into wins we would be near the top. It is very small margins, we are picking points up, and we are playing well and look solid right across the pitch.

“The new training pitch is sorted; yes we have gone once a week for the winter. I don’t think that will make any difference, the girls will get fitness programmes for the rest of the week.

“I think they will be more motivated for that one session a week. We are backed by the Club, to train and play in the area is important as the players play for Gillingham. The girls are very committed at this level and they want to play at the highest level and once a week will help that commitment.

“I think it will work out well, it is a good move for the Club and hopefully we will see the benefit from it.”
