Varley’s Views ahead of West Ham

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on December 9, 2011

Gills Ladies make the short trip into Essex on Sunday afternoon to take on West Ham United Ladies.

Ian Varley is hoping to see his side bounce back to winning ways quickly after defeat against Plymouth Ladies last weekend.

Speaking ahead of the game, Ian said: “It is certainly a tough game but it’s one we are looking forward too.

“We should have beaten them in the first game but didn’t take our chances so hopefully we can do that this time as well as keeping a clean sheet. It is certainly not an easy place to go though.

“It should be a good game and with the League positions as they are will give it that added incentive.

“I’ve said before they really should be winning the League, as they are a very good side, so the pressure is going to be more on them which may help us.

When I talk about us over achieving as a team, West Ham in my opinion have under achieved over the past few seasons as the club should really be in the National Premiership in my opinion without question.”

The Ladies are still looking to move up the League as high as possible, even if they can’t get promotion.

Ian added: “Sundays defeat against Plymouth ended our slim promotion hopes so we just want to get as many points as we can from the last three games.

“I’ve made it clear to the girls that I want to finish as high as possible to give us a good platform to start from next season.

“It’s no secret we don’t score enough goals and that’s something that needs to be addressed. It’s one of the hardest things to do in football and we need someone who can do it if we are going to push for promotion.

“It’s strange to have only three League games left but we’ll certainly be looking to sign off the year with a positive result.”
