Varley: I am very pleased

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on December 13, 2011

Ladies manager Ian Varley was pleased to see his side bounce back with a point against West Ham.

Natalie Crinean netted the Ladies goal just before half time to bring the scores back level.

Speaking after the match, Ian said: “I am very pleased and I think on reflection of the game a draw was a fair result as both teams didn’t do enough in the final 3rd to win the game.

“Nat has missed the last two games so to score and get through 85 minutes was a massive bonus for us! I thought she led the line superbly and really did lead by example.

“I really can’t speak highly enough of Quants (Sarah Quantrill) she’s been absolutely brilliant for us all season! As a team we have defended brilliantly and Quants will be the first to admit there have been several games she’s had to do very little because we’ve defended so well.

“Head to head to me over the season it is massive to take points off West Ham. As it stands only Colchester United and Plymouth have taken points off us over two games so to draw twice against a team that really should be winning this League is testament to my players. Last season they beat us twice so again it shows improvement and that’s all I can ask for.”

The Gills head into the Kent Cup this weekend and therefore the Christmas break in 5th place and back in form, something that is important for Ian.

He added: “For me it was important to bounce back from the defeat to Plymouth and to come to one of the best teams in the League and get a result shows how far we’ve come as a team this season.

“Looking at the table now it’s very unlikely we will finish lower than 5th and after finishing second bottom last season, with relatively the same group of players shows a big improvement and that’s all you can ask for season after season. If you’re improving then you’re doing something right.

“We’ll be going all out to finish as high as possible and if we can win our remaining two games we’ll give ourselves a chance.

“As I’ve said it was important to bounce back from last week with a positive result and we’ll look to end the year with a win against Anchorians.”
