Varley: We were very clinical

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on December 20, 2011

Ian Varley was pleased to see his side progress into the semi-finals of the Kent Cup on Sunday afternoon.

In fairness it was a one sided affair and he was pleased to see that the goals were shared about and chances that were created were finished with some skill.

Speaking after the game, Ian said: “These types of games are always difficult obviously the result was quite straightforward in the end.

“We did ok and we didn’t score for 25 or 26 minutes but once we got into it we were very clinical and scored some good goals. We didn’t miss that many chances and overall we are pleased with the performance.”

The front three of the Ladies Vicky Ashton-Jones, Natalie Crinean and Lauren Phillips found the net more than once during the game.

Ian added: “Everyone has chipped in today and quite a few players have got some goals which is good to see. We had plenty of chances today and I think our shot to goals ratio was excellent and it was good for the forwards to get some goals on the board.

“That doesn’t happen in our League or the League and FA Cups in terms of scoring that many goals in a game. In that respect it is pleasing that the forwards have got the score sheet and it will give them confidence going into the New Year.”

The Ladies have ended the year on a high and head into the rest of the season full of confidence for the League and Cup competitions, something Ian agreed with.

He said: “It is a good way to round off with a draw last week away at West Ham and followed up with a comfortable victory to put us in the semi-finals of the Kent Cup. It is always nice to be in the semi-finals, so we are pleased to end the year on a high.

“I would expect the semi-final to be Millwall but you never know, again it is at home and I think we are getting used to playing at home. The size of the pitch suits us and we have been moving the ball a lot better and creating chances. As long as we can keep putting the chances away hopefully we will win this competition.”
