Varley’s Views ahead of Colchester

Published by Gillingham Ladies Media on January 6, 2012

Gills Ladies finally get back to match action this weekend following their annual Christmas break.

They are straight into cup action as they enter the FA Cup at the second round stage, with Colchester United Ladies visiting Chatham Town.

Speaking ahead of the game, Ian said: “Of course the FA cup is a special competition and one everyone enjoys taking part in!

“Realistically for us its a very difficult competition to win and that’s proven with the tough draw we’ve got.

“Certainly for the neutral our recent FA Cup games have been great games yes but not for me on the sidelines! We seem to do alright in cup competitions and hopefully we can progress Sunday.

“Its the toughest possible draw we could so to say I wasn’t happy was an understatement.

“That’s not to say I don’t think we can win the game because of course we can its just you would like easier draws in the early rounds. Being the underdogs may suit us, we’ll have to see. We are certainly due a win against Colchester though so hopefully that can be on Sunday.”

With the first half of the season now over the half term report for Ian reads ‘much improved.’

He added: “We’ve done okay yeah and its certainly an improvement on last season. Like you say its important we carry that on into the second half of the season and not let our campaign fizzle out.

“There’s plenty to play for so that should give the girls the motivation to keep doing what they have been doing and look to possibly win some silverware!

“That’s the only thing your judged on at the end of the day so we’ll be doing our best to win something.”
