Varley: It was always going to be tough

Ian Varley was happy with his sides performance despite defeat against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
A last minute goal from Kate Longhurst sealed a 2-1 win for the WSL side for the second season in a row.
Speaking after the game, Ian said: “It was always going to be tough but if I’m honest I’m a little disappointed with how we applied ourselves. Don’t get me wrong we defended well but it wasn’t until the last 30 minutes that we had a real go at them which caused them numerous problems. I am pleased with everyone though as its not easy playing against a WSL side.
“I think the three 30 minutes worked in our favour as our fitness levels are nothing like what Chelsea’s are! To lose only one of them though is a real positive, its just a shame we couldn’t hold out for the draw.
“I am disappointing with both goals we conceded as both the free kick and corner leading to there goals were avoidable! The free kick was deflected in and we failed to deal with the corner.
Lauren Phillips scored the Gills goal and Ian was pleased for the hard working striker.
He added: “I have absolutely no idea how Potter did that but it was a great finish.
“I am pleased for her as well because I made a huge mistake leaving her out the week before against Keynsham and for her to come back in work her socks off and score a great goal just shows the type of player and person she is!
